This book wandered around, sat down, had a cuppa, maybe a few bolls and wandered off again Still not sure what the story was, but it certainly took me along for the ride Other friends of mine who can t bother with a book that doesn t go anywhere would have given up before the girls even arrived in town I stuck around though, even if just for the chance to wonder if the bolls cafe exists.. I really didn t enjoy this book I felt the author was tring to make some big life points about issues facing women mid life but it all went nowhere I found the acccent of the father really annoying and what was the point of her husband being away in Australia and what happened to the women s group she never really formed and the constant references to Zofia s breasts served what narrative purpose This is a funny and lively book It s an entertaining follow up to Too Many Men I was sorry to leave its characters behind.Edek and Zofia are both zany Edek is a holocausr survivor in his late eighties Zofia is an in your face, larger than life character in her sixties It is a rip roaring tale, yet there s also an interesting focus on anxiety and worrying when it comes to Ruth, Edek s daughter I enjoyed the way the Ruth character is drawn, being portrayed as an intense and complex person.I This is a funny and lively book It s an entertaining follow up to Too Many Men I was sorry to leave its characters behind.Edek and Zofia are both zany Edek is a holocausr survivor in his late eighties Zofia is an in your face, larger than life character in her sixties It is a rip roaring tale, yet there s also an interesting focus on anxiety and worrying when it comes to Ruth, Edek s daughter I enjoyed the way the Ruth character is drawn, being portrayed as an intense and complex person.I liked its lighthearted observations on ageing and love I really enjoyed the food descriptions I would recommend this book as an entertaining and interestimg read less I will admit I did not enjoy the first 30 pages or so Brett s writing style seemed amateurish and the story didn t interest me However, I always give books 50 pages before putting them down, and I was absolutely hooked by that point Brett s characters are memorable and her writing is hilarious, particularly in how Ruth thinks she has many neurosis , and the conversations between Ruth and her father, Edek While Brett is no Wodehouse, I felt a similar sort of pleasure and appreciation for the I will admit I did not enjoy the first 30 pages or so Brett s writing style seemed amateurish and the story didn t interest me However, I always give books 50 pages before putting them down, and I was absolutely hooked by that point Brett s characters are memorable and her writing is hilarious, particularly in how Ruth thinks she has many neurosis , and the conversations between Ruth and her father, Edek While Brett is no Wodehouse, I felt a similar sort of pleasure and appreciation for the lightheartedness while reading this story, and was similarly saddened when I finished the novel Cute I picked it because of the title, as I often do There s a guy in it whose second language is English The accent is portrayed well in the writing, but that part gets annoying. I laughed and I laughed and I laughed What else can I say Food, Manhattan, a neurotic Jewish daughter, a fun loving Jewish father, and some busty and lusty Polish womenit makes for one good read. It hasn t been easy for Ruth Rothwax, the proprietor of a successful letter writing business, to branch out into a new greeting card line Her father, Edek, is driving her crazy at the office Other women, who she thought would be supportive, are being catty and competitive, behavior Ruth swears that she will never imitate But then Zofia arrives to turn Ruth s aspirations of sisterly solidarity and her life upside down Fresh off the plane from Poland a buxom, sixty something femme fatale with a talent for making meatballs Zofia wants to open a restaurant And Edek, Zofia s most passionate admirer, wants his daughter to finance the enterprise But Ruth knows that gleam in Zofia s eye only too well and she knows it means big trouble for all of them I laughed out loud reading this book Brett keeps the atmosphere light even though the topics are sometimes heavy Clever and fun predictable and repetitive should have been funny and clever, however it wasn t meh Weak plot Pedestrian writing The story is based around setting up a restaurant with the same name as this novel, which sells meatballs No.
