R Shankar, a well known physicist and contagiously enthusiastic educator, was among the first to offer a course through the innovative Open Yale Course program His popular online video lectures on introductory physics have been viewed over a million times In this second book based on his online Yale course, Shankar explains essential concepts, including electromagnetism, optics, and quantum mechanics The book begins at the simplest level, develops the basics, and reinforces fundamentals, ensuring a solid foundation in the principles and methods of physics It provides an ideal introduction for college level students of physics, chemistry, and engineering for motivated AP Physics students and for general readers interested in advances in the sciences Very good value for money Surprisingly accessible material and accompanies an online course. I have watched a lot of Professor Shankar s Yale lectures on YouTube and always find them clear, informative, enlightening and entertaining he has a calm, authoritative presentational style and a dry wit, which I enjoy I like the fact that for the physics he covers, he always finds the basic principles and seeks the full extent of their applicability Also, I now have both of Professor Shankar s fundamentals of physics books, and they are a delightful accompaniment to his Yale lectures. He has taught me a lot of physics I am an engineer, and have much remaining to learn from further study of the material Recently, I watched the videos of his two lectures on geometrical optics several times from fundamentals of physics II , because his treatment is relevant to my requirement Professor Shankar s insight into the versatility of least time for ray optics was a major breakthrough for my personal work I would not have been aware of the scope of least time, had I not seen Professor Shankar s material Also, the clarity of his explanation that light appears to behave differently depending upon the scale it is being viewed at relative to the size of light waves, was very helpful to me My general experience is that he is equally penetrating and lucid on all the topics he covers.I was very pleased to see he has recently released this second book Fundamentals of Physics II Electromagnetism, Optics, and Quantum Mechanics which accompanies his second Yale lecture series I was surprised to see the only review of this book to date on.uk gives it a one star rating because I give it a five star rating inline with the reviews on Technical books in particular, have to suit a person s current knowledge and requirements Professor Shankar s lectures and his books suit my requirements. This book should be read combined with Shankar s corresponding online course by anyone interested in physicsCombining the book and the videos helps appreciate the quality of Shankar s treatment, rarely found elsewhere excellent teaching ability, clarity, focus and a zest of fun Along with the necessary maths excursions. In a few words a piece of art
